Almost a thousand people including doctors, market women and concerned citizens stormed the presidential villa to call on the President Buhari led Federal Government to urgently implement the National Health Act. This call came as the NMA marks its physician’s week with a walk to the presidential villa.

With about 600 Nigerians who showed up for the walk including Market women, the crowd moved
along the main street leading to the federal secretariat, armed security escorted the fearless ‘mob’ up till the road leading to the presidential villa. Though the security at the villa gate didn’t grant entrance they instead requested that the letter to the president drafted by the NMA with inputs from the
coalition be submitted to them and assured that this will be delivered to the president as they were in the FEC meeting and would not allow any body through for security concerns.

The Nigerian Medical Association is part of the Health Sector Reform Coalition and members of the coalition had agreed to leverage every opportunity to amplify the call for the 1% CRF in 2017 budget. ONE.ORG helped to modify the scope of the walk to ensure the necessary impact in view of the urgency of the demand.

Speaking at the event the NMA President Prof. Ogirim said ‘The act is an act of parliament and not implementing it amounts to illegality and the next step is to go to courts if not implemented. The NMA president, Professor Ogirim while addressing the crowd at the rally also promised to return to the streets if no positive response is received from the Federal Government.
