Google pays tribute to the hole puncher

Google is paying homage to arguably the most important office tool ever created.
Tuesday marks the 131st anniversary of the hole puncher, the clever tool allowing users to punch identical holes on a sheet of paper.

The hole punch takes several forms, from a single hole punch to three-hole punch.

Regardless of model, for any kid who had to add loose-leaf papers to a ringed binder, the hole punch was (and is) a lifesaver.

The doodle shows a sheet of paper where the second "g" on Google's logo sits, followed by an animated hole puncher creating a pair of eyes and smile. Google hailed the hole puncher as an "understated – but essential – artifact of German engineering."

"As modern workplaces trek further into the digital frontier, this centuries-old tool remains largely, wonderfully, the same," wrote Google in a blog post published Tuesday.
