Arsene Wenger is right to Blame His Players, Not the Referee. This time at least

Defending champions Arsenal were knocked out of the FA. Cup by lower league opposition in the third round for the first time in Arsene Wenger's reign, and although the match was still mired by poor decisions on the part of the match officials, this time at least, the Arsenal manager should lay the blame on his team.

Arsenal never quite got going - never even reached first gear, not to talk of elevating their performance to a level that is expected of a defending champion. Throughout the game, Nothingham Forest looked the better side, and seems to even want it more. Their directness was a constant cause of concern for the slow Arsenal backline.

Time and time again, they played the ball over the top to catch Mertersacker flat foot. It wasn't particularly genius, rather it was an obvious tactics, considering the center back pairing of the aging Mertersacker and inexperienced Holding was a particularly slow one. And they were not helped by aging and want away Debuchy, who had at best an average game.

The game was almost over before the decision to allow the second penalty to stand even though it shouldn't have, and the intriguing decision to give only an additional four minutes, despite all the minutes wasted over the decision whether to allow the penalty to stand.

Arsene Wenger should also take the blame for playing a disjointed team that have barely played a game together at this level.
